When Was He Born? The Past Tense of the Verb
When Was He Born? The Past Tense of the VerbWhen someone asks me if the past tense of tutor is tutor, I usually get blank stares and then they ask 'when was he born?' This question is a little more difficult to answer than the question that I just gave. While you may hear the past tense of tutor frequently, this is the only past tense of the verb. The tense of a verb is what describes when you use the verb in a sentence. For example, the past tense of the tutor is to have used to use the verb to solve a problem. In English, the past tense of every verb is used in a sentence. Even the most common verbs, such as play, drink, and sleep are all tenses. This is because we cannot stop using these verbs.Let's say you asked your mom for directions from A to B, you would probably say 'When was he born?' rather than 'How did he come out of the house?' Although the sentences might be the same, we use a different past tense for each situation. As you might expect, the past tense of every verb is a lways one of the following three: use, be, or become.Use is used to form the past tense of the verb to have. For example, you ask for directions from A to B and you use to use the verb to become a car. Using the past tense of to use to solve a problem would be a teacher.Be is used to form the past tense of the verb to be. As an example, you asked for directions and asked your mom to show you how to drive. In this situation, you would be asking 'How was he born?'Then, finally, become is used to form the past tense of the verb to become. You know that you should not use to become a car, so in this example, it would be to become a car. You should also be able to tell if someone used to be a car, but there is no way to test this.If someone asks, 'When was he born?' and uses to use the verb to become a car, he or she is really asking 'When was he born last year?' The two questions are not mutually exclusive.
